Skokie Medical Center
On a site with restricted width, the challenge was to
accommodate the priority of street orientation while avoiding having a
narrow space for each of two medical suites.
A side atrium entrance allowed effective circulation into each suite and
provided a quality width-to-depth ratio for planning each suite. Since the
atrium height was kept at a minimum, the sloping roofs of the adjoining
suites were able to accommodate clerestory windows over the lower entrance
portion for natural light. The interior sloped ceiling, composed of
laminated wood beams and decking, further enhanced this geometric
configuration. This approach avoided the standard flat ceiling and provided
natural lighting for both suites.
Consequently, both suites had natural sunlight, a quality entrance, and a
workable space layout for each suite.
