Office of Dr. Robbins
The allotted dental space existed in a mid-rise
curvilinear building. The exterior module placement of windows did not
coordinate with the required spaces for the interior treatment rooms.
The design solution was to create spaces with partitions less than full
ceiling height. These walls were configured to be positioned away from the
perimeter wall, avoiding the awkward window positioning.
Glass blocks were incorporated into these walls at the window area,
diffusing the window alignment, but still allowing natural light to
penetrate the space. Additional high-output fluorescent lights were placed
on top of the low partitions to bounce light onto the ceiling for
supplemental lighting.
This combination of partial-height partitions with glass block inserts
achieved the proper space relationship for dentistry and enhanced the
building's curved forms.
