Sanctuary of the Divine Mercy
The Sanctuary of the Divine Mercy is a meditation chapel
and garden adjacent to St. Stanislaus Kostka Church on the near northwest
side of Chicago. The parish and a neighboring convent sit adjacent to a busy
expressway, in the midst of a rapidly-gentrifying neighborhood. According to
the Sanctuary's mission statement, it "seeks to revitalize the heritage of a
people in a journey by fostering a deeper relationship with the past,
present, and future through silent contemplation on the mystery of God's
love revealed in salvation history and quiet reflection on the manifestation
of that love in their daily lives."
Toward that end, David Zeunert & Associates designed an
intimate, octagonal chapel that is reached via a meandering pathway through
a walled garden that features various shrines. The chapel itself features a
tall ceiling with clerestory windows that provide indirect natural light to
the worship space. The worship space consists of concentric rows of seating
focused on the adoration of the Blessed Sacrament.
